Abstract
As the complexity of application systems grows rapidly, identifying the critical statistics for effective query optimization and keeping the statistics up to date becomes practically impossible for users of most relational database management systems. Likewise, designing a viable set of indexes demands in-depth knowledge on the underlying optimization technology and query characteristics, which may not always be available in a typical user environment. This presentation describes the DB2 road map toward an autonomic optimizer, by which inadequate inputs, such as a lack of statistics and indexes, to the optimizer will be deleted and corrected automatically.
